Endoscope is an imaging device that is used to examine the interiors of an organ or any part of the body. It consists of a tube that facilitates the delivery of light on the organ that is under observation. The instrument also contains a channel that allows the passage of medical instruments. In Endoscopic surgeries, there are small incisions made in the body for diagnosis and treatment. This form of surgery is also known as Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). Endoscopic surgery causes less trauma and pain unlike the traditional methods. As there is minimal body openings, scarring is also less.
Procedure for Endoscopic Surgery
Most of the surgical endoscopies are performed by passing small cameras or imaging devices through incision around 2 cm deep into the affected area such as chest, spinal cord, liver or abdomen.
Retrograde – In Retrograde Endoscopy, the imaging device is inserted into the bladder. This method helps to break kidney stones and other blockages
Antegrade – This method is particularly in use for kidney surgeries. The procedure is to insert the nephrostomy tube. This tube is left for around 2 days in the patient's body for draining out the urine. Later, the examination of kidney is done through an x-ray to confirm its normal functioning.
