When laser technology arrived on the scene in 1960, it was considered as a “solution looking for a problem”. However, it went on to find utility in varied fields in modern society, many people were skeptical regarding the use of light beams as a physical medical instrument. It’s nearly five decades since laser technology has been invented and has witnessed exponential advancement, becoming one of the most beneficial and versatile tools in the domain of medical treatments. Doctors and medical researchers have noticed the prospects of laser technology in the number of surgical procedures such as cutting of tissues, correction of eyesight, burning away cavities in tooth, cleansing of arteries and various cosmetic treatments.

Scalpel

Surgical incisions made with scissors and knives are not precise and can cause danger to life. However with the use of laser technology, the probability of risk during crucial surgeries reduces at large, as lasers beams are consistent and infiltrate in equal depth. Another advantage of laser technology is that it cauterizes broken blood vessels without causing excessive blood loss. On the other hand, some doctors believe that while lasers are useful in certain surgical procedures, they do not replace the scalp totally.

Laser Dentistry

Dentistry is another major branch of medical treatments which has benefitted from laser technology. No one likes to get their cavity drilled and the procedure of metal drilling requires the use of anesthesia that causes numbness in the mouth. Also the sound of tooth drilling is quite irritating. Here, the laser beam is set at a power that is strong enough to eliminate the decayed tissue but will not cause any harm to the tooth enamel.

Cleaning Arteries

Today, lasers are excessively used to clean plaque in the arteries. It helps in Treatment and Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases.Plaque is a hard fatty substance that builds on the inner walls of the arteries and obstructs the easy flow of blood. Such a situation can result in heart attack. The laser technique is used by implanting a tiny fiber array into the blood vessel of arms and leg. The laser beam travels all the way to the blocked arteries to identify the plaque and destroy it in Heart & Vascular System. It avoids the consequences that lead to cardiac disorders  and the long recuperation process thereafter.
