Introduction to Gastric Banding
One of the most common of Bariatric Surgeries, performed to reduce the volume of the stomach in obese or overweight patients is Gastric banding. This involves putting a silicon band , strapped around the upper portion of the stomach. The system helps the patient eat less by limiting the amount of food that can be eaten at one time and increasing the time it takes for food to be digested.
Procedure for Gastric Banding
During the gastric banding Surgery, a new and a smaller stomach is created with a line of staples, and is connected to the loop of small bowel. A small silicone band is placed around the upper stomach. This creates a small reservoir and a relatively restricted passage to the lower stomach. The opening between the pouch and the lower part of the stomach can be adjusted in size by inflating or deflating the hollow band. Inflating the band makes the opening smaller, causing food to pass more slowly. Deflating the band makes it wider, causes food to pass more quickly.
Length of Gastric Banding
The average length of gastric banding Surgery is 2 hours. The patient undergoing gastric banding generally stays at the hospital for 2-3 days.
