Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the study of digestive system and its disorders. The name has Greek origin as it is derived from 3 Greek words which are 'gastros' (stomach), 'enteron' (intestine) and 'logos' (reason).

Endoscopy (UGI Endoscopy)
Endoscopy is used to view the upper GI tract including the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. Abnormal growths in stomach, bowel obstruction, hiatal hernia, inflammation, precancerous condition, ulcers etc are detected through Endoscopy.

The upper GI endoscopy test should be done in empty stomach. Smoking and chewing gum are strictly prohibited during this period. In an alternative method a barium x-ray and ultrasound (sonogram) is used for the medical examination.

Endoscopy Pseudocyst Drainage
This method is used to detect acute pancreatitis. In this method, a fluid that is formed after the disease is collected. Depending on the nature of the pseudocyst, surgical drainage may be performed. The surgery is done with an open incision or with laparoscopic devices which are inserted through small incisions.

If symptoms like fever or chills, continual abdominal pain, drainage from any incision are observed then it is advised to consult the physician.

Colonoscopy (Full Length)
Colonoscopy is a method which is used to see the large intestine including the colon and rectum. Colonoscopy can detect inflamed tissue, ulcers and abnormal growths. Apart from detecting sudden changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding from the anus and weight loss, it is also used to identify the early symptoms of colorectal cancer.

A clear liquid diet (as prescribed by the physician) is to be taken for 1 to 3 days (depending upon the requirement) before the test.

ERCP (Diagnostic)
ERCP is also known as Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography. Using this method physicians detect problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas. It is also used to identify conditions like the bile ducts having gallstones, inflammatory strictures, leaks (from trauma and surgery) and cancer.

A combination of X-rays and an endoscope are used for this test. The physician sees the inside of the stomach and duodenum through the endoscope and then injects dyes into the ducts in the biliary tree and pancreas so that it can be identified through X- rays. The process takes around 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Gall Bladder Surgery
The traditional method involves the gallbladder to be removed through a 5- to 8-inch long incision in the abdomen

Capsule Endoscopy (In patients)
The method, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001, is used for viewing images of the digestive tract.

Lap. Cholesystectomy
The modern method practiced in removing the gallbladder is known as laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A laparoscope is used in this process to remove the gallbladder. In fact, this method is more effective than the traditional method.

Hernia Repair
Hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall. It may be present at the time of birth or it can grow over a period of time. Some of the symptoms seen in Hernia include a lump in the groin area when standing or straining, pain at the site of the lump, scrotum swelling, severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite.

Open surgery and laparoscopic surgery are used for repairing hernia.
