Bone Grafting Procedures : Introduction and Types

Bone Grafting is a surgical procedure wherein a missing bone is replaced with the artificial one in order to repair the rupturing in bone. This procedure is doable because bone, unlike other body tissues, have the ability to restore itself completely when space is provided to grow. When the original bone starts growing, it automatically replaces the prosthetic graft and space is covered by fully incorporated new bone. In this post, I have enlisted three surgical procedures that require bone grafting depending upon the situation.

Periodontal Flap Surgery is the most commonly used surgical treatments for treating the severe damage caused to the teeth supporting bones by gum disease . During this surgery, a dentist cuts and pulls back the section of your gums in order to thoroughly cleaning the root of the teeth and for repairing bone damage caused by gum disease. The gum flap will be sutured into place and veneered with dressing to stop bleeding. The basic goal of this dental procedure is to enhance the life expectancy of the teeth.

Dental Bone Grafting

Dental Bone Grafting refers to the procedure wherein a dentist shrinks the jawbone by using bone grafts. It is necessary for those who are undergoing dental implants because implants are not placed in the areas of weak and broken bones. The requirement of this procedure depends entirely on the thickness of the bone and the amount of bone loss occurred. During the Bone Grafting procedure, the dentist divides the sections of the jaw bone via bone expansion tools and insert the implant between them. The reason behind the success of this surgical process is the regeneration and the growth capability of bone tissue in different parts of the body.

Cleft Palate Surgery

Cleft Palate and lip is the most saddening deformities that is affecting a large chunk of children’s all around the world. It is a situation wherein the two plates of the skull that form hard palate are not completely fixed. However, the corrective procedure for this facial deformity has been introduced in the cosmetic branch of the medical technology. The three types of cleft lip treatments available are unilateral complete, bilateral complete and unilateral incomplete. Unilateral incomplete appears like a dent in the upper like but below the nose. On the other hand, unilateral complete is a situation wherein the dent reaches the nostril and when dent reaches both nostrils, it is called bilateral complete. However, the surgery can be conducted immediately after the birth, most doctors prefer to operate after the baby is 10 weeks old. The need for bone grafting during cleft palate surgery occurs when the cleft is extensive and grafts can be obtained from the child itself.
