The surgeons of Apollo Hospital at Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad announced that they successfully performed two major surgeries Living Donor Liver Transplantation and Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) on a patient in a single sitting. The operation was spanned over 14 hours and involved expertise of multi-speciality teams including Cardiac, Oncology and Liver transplant. This combined procedure is a rare feat of modern medical science done by the Apollo doctors.
The patient Mr Siva Prasad Rao, a 67 year old male from Hyderabad was suffering from Liver Cirrhosis and Liver cancer. His 33 year old daughter Mrs Rohini, came forward to donate a part of her liver to her father. During pre-surgery evaluation it was found that the patient had major coronary artery disease with critical blocks in the blood vessels to the heart that needed to be cured before the liver transplant. There was no other option than the CABG as after Coronary stenting a long waiting period of 8 to 12 weeks is required to perform the liver transplant. And during this time patient’s cancer could spread. Then the multidisciplinary team at Apollo Hospitals, decided to perform both the operation, Liver transplant and Coronary Artery Bypass at the same time.
On December 6, 2019, the Apollo doctors carried out the dual surgeries. They started with the CABG and then performed the Living donor liver transplant. In this procedure a portion of liver of a healthy living person is taken and then it is transplanted in the patient. The entire surgical procedure was completed in 14 hours. The donor was discharged after 6 days and the patient was discharged after 12 days of the operations. Both of them are now in good health.
