Recently, in a rare surgery, a team of doctors removed a tumor weighing over 2.5 kilograms during an emergency caesarean operation on 26-year old pregnant women.
Although the surgery was conducted around 2 months back, the doctors were waiting for the patient to recover completely. The tumor had grown up to the size of a watermelon and remained undetected till the woman was brought to the Hospital in Mumbai.
“This is the first case in the country in which such a huge ovarian tumor has been removed during an emergency caesarian section operation,” Dr. Niranjan Chavan.
The woman, a domestic helper from Vikhroli suburb was in labor with a high pulse rate when she was brought to the Hospital on 15th June from a private nursing home. She was immediately shifted to the operation theatre. Following a caesarian section operation, the women gave birth to a baby boy weighing 2.7 kilograms.
Following the child’s delivery, as the doctors were cleaning the paracolic sections, they were stunned to detect a huge ovarian tumor in the woman’s abdomen.
“We had checked her medical records which only stated that she had already undergone two caesarian section procedures in the past, but nowhere was it mentioned that she had an ovarian tumor,” Mr. Chavan said
Doctors termed it as “an unfortunate development” and said that Chavan and his team finally removed the huge tumor, punctured it and extracted 1 liter fluid from it. They also managed to save the left ovary of the patient. Thereafter, they performed a tubal litigation on the couple as per request.
The dean of Hospital ‘Avinash Supe’ and the Head of the Department ‘Dr. YS Nandanwar’, while congratulating the medical team, said that this was the first case reported in India wherein such a large ovarian tumor was removed during emergency caesarean section operation.
As per the patient’s histopathology report, who has two sons, says that the tumor was benign and she would be able to lead a normal healthy life.
