Introduction
Ilizarov Technique is a deformity rectification procedure originally invented in 1950s by Professor Gavril Abramovich. The device is a circular fixator which provides structural support for greater weight bearing. The frame is used to support a fractured limb and corrects the defect by the concept of callotasis.
Procedure
The procedure includes the creation of a surgical fracture after which the bone is allowed to heal following which a distraction created makes the new bone regenerate through the frame. This is how the deformity is rectified.
Risks
Though the Ilizarov apparatus is extremely potential it too has defects. It is difficult to use. The common risks involved are
- Pin site infection
- Swelling
- Limb pain
- Muscle transfixion
Facilities
