Depending on the nature of the problem, shoulder surgery
is carried out by orthopedic surgeons. Some of the common
ailments with regard to the shoulder are
Bursitis or Tendinitis - occurs mainly for excessive
exercises like swimming, painting or weight-lifting.
Impingement and Partial Rotator Cuff Tears -
in this case, development of spurs on the underside
of the acromion or the AC joint leads to cuff tears.
Only in serious conditions shoulder surgery is required.
Full Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears - this is
usually a result of weight-lifting, injuries and impingement.
Surgery is necessary to repair the tear.
Fractured Collarbone and AC Joint Separation
- the injury is usually treated non-operatively. However
in severe conditions like AC joint separation may require
surgery.
Fractured Head of the Arm Bone - found particularly
among older people suffering from osteoporosis, it may
require open surgery.
Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis - occurs
when the articular surface of the joint wears out. In
extreme situations shoulder replacement is suggested.
The different types of surgical
procedures used are
- Arthroscopy - involves
insertion of a thin pencil-like device with small lens
and lighting system attached, into an incision made
on the patients shoulder. This helps the surgeon to
view the affected area and with the help of other surgical
instruments
- Open Surgery - incisions
of a few inches are made to repair the damages.
