According to Ayurveda the pains are caused by the aggravation of Vata (air) dosha. Arthritis is caused by the accumulation of Ama (toxic by-product of improper digestion) and aggravation of Vata. The Ama deposits at the sites which are weaker in the body. After deposition in the joints, there is a aggravation of Vata which results in Amavata or arthritis. Ayurvedic Treatment for Arthritis
- Herbal Ayurvedic Medicines : Herbal medicines Boswellia (Indian Frankincense) and Commiphoae Mukul are taken in the form of capsules three times a day can decrease pain. Many other herbs also decreases the inflammation and strengthens the bones and flexibility.
- Massage : Hot baths and Sesame oil vigorous massage on the affected area is beneficial in arthritic pain as it reduces Vata.
- Diet Modification : In arthritis, anti-Vata diet is suggested. Hot spicy food, potato, eggplant cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, okra and more should be completely avoided. Increase intake of vegetables, fruits and juices, homemade soups are prescribed.
- Physical Exercise and Yoga : Moderate exercises are prescribed in arthritis . Too much exercise can aggravate the arthritis condition.
