Introduction to Tympanoplasty
Tympanoplasty is the medical surgery to repair perforated
eardrums or Tympanic membrane, as it is scientifically
called. This microsurgery uses the patient's own tissues
to reconstruct the Tympanic Membrane. Tympanoplasty
helps to repair infection, protect the middle ear or
to restore hearing capability of the patient.
Procedure of Tympanoplasty
At first, the patient is kept under general or local
anesthesia. Tympanoplasty first involves a surgical
cut made behind the ear. Then the ear is moved forward
to expose the eardrum. The ear drum is also lifted up
to expose the middle ear or the inside of the ear.In
case of a hole in the eardrum, it is cleaned and the
infected area cut away. Next, a piece of fascia( tissue
under the skin), known as graft is taken from behind
the ear. The graft is inserted underneath the remaining
drum remnant which is folded back onto the perforation
to provide closure.
Length of Tympanoplasty
Tympanoplasty usually needs an overnight stay at the
hospital.
Side Effects of Tympanoplasty
Tympanoplasty might leave special side effects other
than some amount of infection and bleeding. Some hearing
loss may still be there after Tympanoplasty. There can
be temporary facial muscle weakness or loss of taste.
In rare cases, there might also be some amount of dizziness
as a side effect of Tympanoplasty.
