Does This Cause Cancer?

by Rishabh

Cancer is one of the modern curses in the field of medicine. Curable only up to a limit, the causes are generally not known. You must come across many things that are actually said to cause cancer but one is entirely not sure.

Cancer Causing Foods

Here are some things are said to cause cancer:

Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners have been said to cause cancer but there is actually no proof. Saccharine did cause cancer in rats, but their bodies react to it differently than humans. There hasn’t been any cancer warning label since 2000. There is no concrete evidence to link disease with the artificial sweeteners.

X-rays

Radiation is a proven cause of cancer. X-ray imaging uses radiation but in very controlled amounts. It does no damage but in great doses it exposes to cancer. Whenever there are x-ray imagings done, the concerned technician covers up the exposed area in a lead cover. The exposure to the skin and human body is limited.

Cell Phones

These modern devices have been a major source of dis-balanced life though it is still not exactly linked with cancer. The cellular device gives off the same type of energy as microwave ovens. Just to be safe use your cellular device to have short chats. Using a hands-free device is also better than keeping it physically closer to your ear.

Meat

Over consumption of meat is also susceptible of causing cancer. The processed meats, white and red all have preservatives called nitrites, which cause cancer. Smoking meats or cooking them at a high temperature creates compounds called PAHs. Studies are under way to see how they affect people.

Bottled water

If your bottle is clear plastic, it probably has bisphenol A (BPA). This chemical is used in food and drink containers, dental sealants, and other products. FDA says the BPA current levels are safe. Avoid canned food and drinks in clear plastic. For hot food, use glass or steel instead.

Sex

Sex is believed to be a cause of cancer. The Human papillomavirus (HPV), the most common sexually transmitted infection, can cause cervical and other cancers. Most adults who have sex will get this virus at some point. But they won’t all get cancer. Most of the time, HPV goes away by itself. To lower your risk it is advisable to get vaccinated if you’re a female aged below 26 or a male aged less than 21. For state always use condoms during sex. Do not have multiple partners as it cause of other health problems too, have sex with only one partner.

Dental fillings

Dental fillings are made up of mercury. Though there were speculations of the fillings leading to cancer, research found out no connection between the two. Mercury fillings actually cannot be associated with cancer or any other disease.

Coffee

If you are a caffeine addict then you need not worry. Caffeine comes with beneficial antioxidants. Contrary to popular belief, drinking moderate amounts of coffee (around four cups daily) lessens the risk of some types of cancer, among them skin, liver and colon. The caffeine over-dosage is only dangerous. Too much of coffee lower the pH (acid) level of your body and here in such conditions cancer thrives the most.

Deodorant and Antiperspirant

Deodorant blocks smell and antiperspirant stops sweat, but these products are believed to be cancer causing agents. Scientists say more research is needed to know for sure if these products boost the odds of breast cancer. Many use chemicals that act like the hormone estrogen, which causes cancer cells to grow. These include benzylparaben, butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben.

Fluoride

Fluoride is found in bottled water, soft drinks, packed food, toothpastes and mouth rinses. Many studies have been conducted on this compound and its link to cancer. Most researchers says there’s no strong tie. The Environmental Protection Agency monitors the levels and is considered safe. Levels in drinking water are in safe limits but if it bothers you switch to bottled spring water, which is usually the least.

Household products

Many household products like pesticides, paints, varnishes and waxes gives off gases known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Avoid such stuff. These gases have been linked to cancer in various forms. Reduce the risk and choose products labeled low VOC and biodegradable when possible. Avoid items labeled as Danger/Poison, Corrosive, Severely Irritating, Highly Flammable, Highly Combustible and Strong Sensitizer.

Power Lines

Anything that makes, sends, or uses electricity gives off extremely low frequency (ELF) radiation. There is no proof that it causes cancer. Scientists and researchers say that there’s cause for limited concern. To be safe, stay away from exposure to electrical devices. If you live close to a power line and you are worried, then get a gizmo called a gaussmeter. You can use it to measure the ELF fields near you and take precautions

Pollution

Air pollution causes over 220,000 lung cancer deaths worldwide a year (most of them in Asia). There’s also a link between dirty air and a higher risk of bladder cancer. To cut your chances, listen to smog alerts and stay indoors on days when air quality is poor. Use masks to not breathe the polluted air directly.
